About Grass Root Dairies

The Gort family emigrated from Holland in 1981 and started Gort's Gouda Cheese Farm in 1983 on forty-five acres at Salmon Arm.

The Wikkerinks took over in August 2007 and renamed it Grass Root Dairies about five years later. They milk roughly eighty-five cows, graze pasture from May through October, and feed certified organic hay through the winter. The farm is not certified organic and uses only on-farm inputs.

The dairy makes Gouda and other cheeses, yogurt and quark. Nature Delivered stocks the non-homogenized grass-fed milk, which comes in a returnable glass bottle with a deposit, and the Bulgarian-style yogurt.

Why we work with them

The cows graze from May through October and the winter hay is certified organic. Only on-farm inputs, which is a quieter way of farming than most dairies manage.

The milk is non-homogenized and comes in a returnable glass bottle, so there is a deposit and the bottle comes back to us. Our customers seem to like that as much as they like the milk.
