Great For
Fresh eating, lunchboxes, cheese boards, salads, apple crisps, muffins and baking.
Salish apples are particularly good sliced into a salad with hearty greens, sharp cheddar, walnuts and a simple vinaigrette. Their crisp texture and sweet-tart flavour are a lovely contrast to savoury ingredients.
Storage
Store apples in the refrigerator's crisper drawer to maintain their crunch and juiciness.
Keep them separate from delicate produce when possible. Apples release ethylene gas, which can speed up ripening in some neighbouring fruits and vegetables.
Build Your Basket
Pair with local cheddar, walnuts and crackers for an easy snack, or add cabbage and carrots for a crunchy apple slaw.
For baking, grab oats, butter and cinnamon for a simple apple crisp.
Good to Know
Salish is a Canadian apple with a BC connection!
Developed through Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada's apple breeding program in Summerland, BC, Salish was bred for its crisp texture, appealing flavour and good storage qualities. Don't worry, apple breeding does NOT mean genetically engineered!
It's a relatively modern apple variety and a nice example of the fruit breeding work that's happened right here in the Okanagan.
How to Stretch This
Apples that are starting to lose their crunch are still excellent for cooking.
Chop them into oatmeal, bake them into muffins or apple crisp, or simmer them with a little water and cinnamon for homemade applesauce.
And there's usually no need to peel them for fresh eating or baking—the skins add colour, texture and fibre.
