Certified Organic Purple Daikon

Beautiful inside and out, these Certified Organic Purple Daikon are grown by Song Hollow Farm in Grindrod, BC.

Portion is one large or 2 small/medium.

Purple daikon is a winter radish with crisp, dense flesh and a mild, slightly sweet and peppery flavour. If you find little red radishes too sharp, don't let the word radish scare you—daikon is generally much milder.

Eat it raw for maximum crunch, pickle it, ferment it, or cook it until tender.

Why You’ll Love It

  • Certified Organic

  • Grown locally in Grindrod, BC

  • Beautiful purple colouring

  • Crisp, juicy texture

  • Mild, slightly sweet radish flavour

  • Delicious raw and cooked

Great For

Slaws, salads, rice bowls, tacos, sandwiches, quick pickles, kimchi, stir-fries, curries, soups and roasted vegetables.

For the easiest introduction, slice it very thinly and add it to a salad or rice bowl. A little rice vinegar, salt and sesame oil is all it really needs.

Storage

Store your daikon in the refrigerator, ideally in a bag or container to keep it from losing moisture.

If it comes with greens attached, remove them before storing the root—they'll pull moisture from the daikon and shorten its storage life.

Build Your Basket

Pair with carrots, cabbage and green onions for a crunchy slaw, or add ginger, garlic and pac choy for an easy stir-fry.

It's also a natural addition to anything you're buying for homemade pickles or kimchi.

Good to Know

Daikon is a type of winter radish, and purple daikon tends to be milder than the little red spring radishes many of us are used to.

And that gorgeous purple isn't just skin-deep. Depending on the variety, the colour can continue through the flesh in purple streaks and rings. The pigment comes from anthocyanins—the same family of plant pigments responsible for the colours in foods like blueberries and purple cabbage.

How to Stretch This

There's usually no need to peel it. Give the outside a good scrub and use the whole root.

If you've eaten your fill of raw daikon, quick-pickle what's left with vinegar, a little sugar and salt. You can also roast it alongside carrots and other root vegetables—the flavour mellows as it cooks and the texture becomes tender.

If yours arrives with fresh greens, don't throw those away either. Radish greens are edible and can be sautéed, added to soups or cooked into a stir-fry.
