BC-Grown Bartlett Pears - 1lbs
Sweet, juicy and beautifully fragrant when ripe, Bartlett pears are a classic BC late-summer fruit. They have smooth, tender flesh and that unmistakable pear flavour that becomes sweeter and more aromatic as they ripen. 1 lbs usually contains 2-3 medium pears.
Bartletts are wonderful for fresh eating, but they're also one of our favourite pears for cooking and preserving. Enjoy them sliced into lunches, baked into desserts, simmered into sauce or tucked away in jars to enjoy later in the year.

Great For
Eating fresh, lunchboxes, salads, oatmeal, yogurt, baking, poaching, pear sauce, chutney and canning. They're especially delicious sliced with a sharp cheese or added to a simple fall salad with greens, nuts and cheese.
Storage
Bartlett pears ripen best off the tree. If yours arrive firm, leave them at room temperature until they're ready to eat.
To check for ripeness, gently press near the neck of the pear, right beside the stem. When it gives slightly to pressure, it's ready. Once ripe, move your pears to the refrigerator to slow further ripening and give yourself a few more days to enjoy them.
Build Your Basket
Pair with local apples for easy lunchbox fruit, or add greens, cheese and nuts for a simple pear salad. For baking season, grab some apples too and combine the two in a crisp or crumble.
Good to Know
Don't wait for a Bartlett pear to become soft all over before eating it. Pears ripen from the inside out, so checking the neck gives you a much better indication of ripeness than squeezing the widest part of the fruit.
Bartletts also change as they ripen: green Bartlett pears gradually become more yellow as they soften and develop their characteristic sweetness and aroma.
How to Stretch This
Have several pears ripen at once? Slice or chop them into oatmeal, muffins or a fruit crisp, simmer them into pear sauce, or poach them for dessert.
For longer keeping, Bartlett pears are also excellent for canning and preserving—one of the reasons they've been such a beloved preserving pear for generations.
